Storm King is a sculpture park an hour north of Manhattan founded in the 60’s by local donors Ralph E. Ogden and H. Peter Stern. The want of a legacy started modestly, but as the potential of sculpture in landscape became apparent, so the scope of the park grew. The park’s collection now has over 100 sculptures in 500 acres of American country land. And the views are just breathtaking.

Realising that the landscape was an integral part of how the sculptures are viewed, the surrounding property was bought up to maintain the natural backdrop of the park. The result is spectacular, with each piece placed carefully and with much consideration. With so much space to play with, the works commissioned are unbelievable large. You have to see it to believe it.

It would take a whole day to enjoy the entire park and the changing seasons are a good reason to return to experience it in different colours. There are bicycles available to rent and a tram service for those less keen on peddling around the grounds.

The large grounds are littered with monumental modern sculptures by modern and contemporary masters, including Henry Moore, Richard Serra, Isamu Noguchi, and Andy Goldsworthy. There are many works on loan keeping the landscape in flux, as well as new works constantly being added. It is a perfect way to explore the Hudson Valley.
